These days with all the additives (ingredients we can’t even pronounce) in processed food, it’s a good idea not to clog your children’s or your liver and kidneys – overuse/overwork can cause these organs to malfunction. After microwaving the chips, mix the above ingredients together in a small bowl, container with a cover and pour over the chips – toss the chips in a covered container or a plastic bag to coat them evenly and serve.

The same thing can be done for popping corn – pop the corn in a brown bag in the microwave and spice them up as you choose – just another idea as a healthy snack.

Menopause is also called “the change of life”. Biologically, this heralds the end of a woman’s reproductive years but it is important to realize that it’s not a death sentence.

It’s the end of ovulating (the ovaries stop producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone) which many think is only important in reproduction. However, these two hormones act on many different organs in the body. There are cells in the vagina, bladder, skin and breasts that all have estrogen receptors which need this hormone to stimulate these receptors for normal cell function. Estrogen is also needed to keep the skin smooth and moist.

Knowing that estrogen is needed not only for a sexual function will allow a woman to understand that this is just a transition to a new phase in her existence on the planet.

Here are some natural tips and tricks, easily available foods that can be added to one’s diet to make this transition smooth and enjoyable:

1. Uncomfortable hot flashes: gotu kola, chasteberry and dong quai relieve hot flashes; make dishes using black beans and tofu and/or soy beans.

2. Vaginal dryness/itching: open a vitamin E capsule and apply the oil. For itching: inserting a tampon with 3-4 drops of tea tree oil for up to 3-hours will give immediate relief.
3. Breast tenderness: use 500-1000 milligrams of evening primrose oil for one month – this is a natural estrogen promoter.

4. Avoid salt: use onions, garlic, celery and lemon juice to flavor food. Make salads from a wide variety of greens (dandelion, mustard, beet, turnip, chicory greens, kale, Swiss chard,) to meet all your mineral needs; especially, the heart-healthy minerals magnesium, potassium and calcium.

5. Dryness and aging of the skin: drink 2-quarts of steamed distilled water daily to help prevent drying of the skin and mucous membranes. In winter, it helps to sleep with a vaporizer in your room, add a few drops of lavender (good to relieve stress).

6. Natural estrogen promoters: brew fennel and raspberry iced tea to replace soda drinks.

Finally, avoid stress or use yoga, relaxation techniques and/or exercise to effectively manage it. Mother nature has given us a powerful weapon – food to use to ease some of the symptoms that plague us. It can be one of the tools used to help give us that quality of life as our life expectancy increases.

An estimated 18 American military veterans take their own lives every day – thousands each year – and those numbers are steadily increasing. Even after weathering the stresses of military life and the terrors of combat, these soldiers find themselves overwhelmed by the transition back into civilian life.

Many have already survived one suicide attempt, but never received the extra help and support they needed, with tragic results.

A team of researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues found that veterans who are repeat suicide attempts suffer significantly greater mortality rates due to suicide compared to both military and civilian peers. The research was published this month in BMC Public Health.

When are we going to realize that war is mentally taxing and that veterans need special care and attention when they return home to re-adjust to civilian life. There are serious consequences of military service that often continue long after veterans return home.  The physical and emotional health of soldiers today is made much worse by the repeated tours of duty.

#tweetyourdiettips: Low Calorie Egg Whites Good for Weight Control

#tweetyourdiet-tips: One whole egg has 78 calories but egg white has only 16-17 calories no carbohydrate, no cholesterol and no fat.  Egg whites are rich in protein and are less like to harbor the dangerous salmonella bacteria that occurs more often in egg yolks.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing an unlicensed medicinal product with intent to place it on the market in respect of the same 800 Evohalers.

It is very sad to see that dishonesty is now so rampant that it has reached those who seek to serve the public in the medical field of prescription drugs.  This type of fraudulent activity is fraught with danger as it could determine if someone lives of dies of a serious condition, such asthma that requires an effective drug to manage and treat.

Did You Know that Lung Disease is the 3rd Leading Cause of Death in the U.S?

Scientists looking at a new therapeutic strategy for patients with chronic bronchitis and emphysema has found that inflammation of the lung can be decreased and its immune function increased after being treated with a compound whose precursor is found in cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli.

COPD (the lung disease) is the third leading cause of death in the U.S and Canada and its symptoms are worsened by frequent bacterial lung infections. The compound is sulforaphane and when targeted to specific pathways, it improves the activities of certain receptors and thus boost the performance of macrophages (types of white blood cells that can bind with and destroy bacteria).

The study found that in patients suffering with chronic bronchitis or COPD this antibacterial action is severely compromised and that sulforaphane could get the bacteria-absorbing process to work more fully again in these people.

These scientists have yet to determine whether a sulforaphane-rich diet could be an effective treatment for COPD sufferers and further research is required.  This study was published on April 13, 2011 in the Journal Science Translational Medicine which is available online for a fee or with subscription.

However, since this author is all about alternative health and treatment as well as prevention of illness and disease, it is advisable that if you are one of these sufferers, there can be no harm in eating a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables.

A new anti-inflammatory drug used by patients with type 2 diabetes improved their kidney function during a year-long study involving researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The study findings, reported in today’s New England Journal of Medicine, mark the first time a drug therapy has led to improved kidney function for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

Previous studies have identified drugs that slowed the deterioration of kidney function, said Dr. Robert Toto, director of the Houston J. and Florence A.

Diabetic patients would be well advised to consume healthy amounts of garlic and ginger as both are natural anti-inflammatory with the added benefit of keeping your blood thin for improved peripheral circulation and reduced heart disease.
